Should You Learn a Second Language?

Should you learn a second language? Well, there is no easy answer to that question. It is totally up to you what you do (including learning a different language). However, the benefits of learning a second language are undeniable. The United States accepts more legal immigrants every year than any other country. With immigrants comes different languages.

3 Reasons to Learn a Second Language

Career: Learning a second language will make you more marketable. Over 80% of jobs in the United States are in the service industry. Immigrants or foreign language speakers are quickly becoming employers, employees, and customers. It is a huge beneifit to hire someone who can effectively communicate with customers, regardless of the language they speak.

Travel: Traveling is the one of the most common reasons people learn a new language. Think about how much more enjoyable a visit to another country would be if you new a fair amount of the native tongue. Going to the bathroom does not have to be a point of the finger and the word bathroom yelled really loud (because of course that makes it better and more understandable, lol)

Your Children: Did you know that English as a Second Language (ESL) is the fastest growing spectrum in the education community. That means that your child is socializing with more people that do not speak English as a primary language. Help your child stay competitive in this changing world by learning a second language and teaching it to them. No one is expecting you to learn Spanish, French, or Chinese in a day. As you learn a little, teach your child.

Learning a second language has always been on my "to do list" but I never seem to get to it. Maybe I should add it to my "bucket list"! ha ha ha

Last year I was in Paris. It would have been nice to be able to speak French. Thankfully most people in Europe speak English as a second language and a lot of our words are borrowed from their language as well.

Learning to play an instrument would be cool too!

Nice hub!

Sometimes the thought of learning another language fluently can be daunting..

But in my travels (I worked as a volunteer overseas), I found that even knowing a few phrases/key-words/greetings, etc. can be a tremendous help in both getting around, as well as in getting to know people & making friends..

The large result compared to the little effort (in the case of learning a few phrases) will prove worth your while..

I agree w/ the various benefits listed here..Tx 4 posting..
